Last weekend I finally got around to making this DIY natural lip balm! I’ve had all the ingredients for a while and decided to take advantage of the rare, undisrupted hour when hubby was occupied with the Playstation and my daughter was having her nap.
I love this this DIY natural lip balm because it contains absolutely no nasties. The ingredients are very similar to those in my DIY natural body butter—coconut oil and shea butter to nourish and condition your lips and essential oils for their therapeutic properties and fragrance. The only difference is the addition of Vitamin E oil for its ability to smooth skin, increase collagen production and prevent free radical damage, as well as organic beeswax to solidify the balm and lock in moisture.
You’ll also need a bunch of empty lip balm tubes and you can get these off eBay cheap as chips.
And be prepared to make a mess. Pouring the melted liquid into these tiny tubes without overflowing, spilling or tipping them over is no easy feat. I suggest you cover your bench with a sheet of baking paper so that you can peel off the balm spillages after they’ve hardened, re-melt them and try again for the 100th time to funnel the fricken liquid into those stupid little tubes!!
*And breathe*
The effort is worth it, I swear! This batch made five tubes which is probably equal to a year’s worth of lip balm, and they also make great little gifts for family and friends.
Here’s how to make it:
DIY natural lip balm recipe
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon organic coconut oil
1 tablespoon organic shea butter
1 tablespoon organic beeswax (pellets or grated block)
1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
20 drops of essential oil (I used a mixture of grapefruit and mandarin)
Method:
Put all ingredients into a glass or metal bowl and melt over a double-boiler.
Make a funnel out of baking paper and pour the liquid into the tubes.
Let set for at least one hour.
Smear onto those luscious lips!
That sounded way easier and less fiddly and frustrating than it actually was, but when the result is a natural, organic, completely non-toxic, nourishing balm that will last you pretty much forever and save you money, then give me fiddly and frustrating anytime!
